Avista names new district manager for Grangeville

Avista has selected Matthew Casey as the new district manager for the Grangeville operating district where he will oversee all electric operations on behalf of Avista. “We are very excited to have Matthew join our team. His familiarity with the Grangeville area, strong work ethic and leadership skills will greatly benefit Avista and its customers,” said David Howell, Avista’s director of operations.

Beardin joins SHC as PT in Kooskia

Monte Beardin, DPT has joined Syringa Hospital and Clinic’s therapy services staff and will be regularly scheduled at the Kooskia Clinic Mondays through Thursdays. Beardin obtained his master in physical therapy in 2001 and his doctorate in 2015. He is also a certified manual physical therapist (CMPT). He lives in Orofino with his wife, Cindy, a photographer and craft designer, and their six children. He has spent the last 10 years practicing in Orofino.

Griffis trains in mountain medicine

Dr. Danny Griffis, a family physician at Syringa Hospital and Clinics, was recently awarded a diploma in Mountain Medicine (DiMM) through the University of New Mexico. The Diploma in Mountain Medicine is an internationally accredited program that has set the standard in advanced training for medical providers in austere backcountry settings for the past 20 years. It consists of 50 hours of didactics in mountain medicine and rescue and 18 days of practical hands on training in the mountains of New Mexico and Colorado during both summer and winter conditions.

Idaho shops on Small Business Saturday

During the weekend, Small Business Saturday completed its eighth anniversary as shoppers across the country supported the local businesses that make our communities thrive. In Idaho, excitement was particularly strong, at spa, nail salons and hair salons which stood out as the type of businesses visited most on Small Business Saturday compared to the national average. These results and more are from the 2017 Small Business Saturday 50-State Survey, released today by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB). Relative to the national average, shoppers in Colorado, Hawaii, and Vermont reported pet stores as the type of small business frequented the most; while shoppers in Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York reported visiting a bakery the most; and shoppers in Georgia, Idaho, Texas reported visiting spas, nail salons or hair salons the most.

It's Your Business: Kooskia Library speeds up its Internet

Typical fall gas price savings, in part caused by reduced demand and the switch to cheaper-to-produce winter-blend fuel, have been slow to arrive this year, both on the national level and here in Idaho. Unfortunately, it’s the continuation of a trend. Since Oct. 1 of this year, the U.S. average price has dropped 4.5 cents, while the Gem State’s pump price has decreased by 10 cents. Based on current market conditions, AAA projects prices will drop by another 5 to 20 cents to end the year.

Area 10th graders recruited for career training pilot program

Lewis-Clark State College and its partners are recruiting 90 area high school students for training preparing students for entry-level manufacturing jobs as part of a free two-year pilot program. Informational events for interested students and their parents or guardians will be held 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Grangeville; additionally, on Nov. 30 (Clarkston), Dec. 7 (Orofino), Dec. 11 (Moscow) and Dec. 13 (Lewiston).
