Christmas Past: Revisiting ‘Letters to Santa’ from 1977-2007

Each year as Christmas dawns, it’s a fun trip down memory lane to look back on past Santa letters that have appeared in the Free Press. In 1977, third graders wrote about the meaning of Christmas while second graders simply asked for items and chit-chatted. The most popular items asked for in Idaho County that year? In order of the number of times requested: Hot Wheels, train set, Stretch Armstrong, Barbie, Mouse Trap Game, Baby Alive, logger truck and a King Kong punching bag.

New Year’s Eve lock-in at Kamiah

Join the Upriver Youth Leadership Council (UYLC) Youth Advisory Board (YAB) for a fun-filled night geared towards teens, on Dec. 31, at the Life Center (4432 US-12, Kamiah, ID). This event will be from 7 p.m.-7 a.m., and is free of charge. Breakfast the following morning will be provided. There will be activities for every interest, including video game tournaments, music, dodgeball, movies, “Minute to Win It” contest, and food. This event is for youth grades 8-12 only. ‘Let’s Talk About It’ first session is Jan. 16

Grangeville Centennial Library was again chosen to be a partner in the Let’s Talk About It program. The public discussion group will meet through April. All meetings are set for Tuesdays, 5:30 p.m., at the library, 215 West North Street, Grangeville. Books are currently available for pickup and the first session is set for Jan. 16. Call 208-983-0951. Community Briefs - Dec 20 2017

The free monthly community breakfast at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church will be held Wednesday, Dec. 27, from 8:30-10 a.m. Breakfasts are held every month on the last Wednesday of each month. St. Catherine’s Catholic Church is located at 7th and Idaho streets in Kamiah. The breakfast this month will be French toast, scrambled eggs, coffee, orange juice and friendly conversation. St. Catherine’s invites all in the community.

Holiday Happenings - Dec. 13, 2017

Clearwater Valley Junior Senior High School’s Winter Concert is set for Wednesday, Dec. 13, 7 p.m., in the CVHS cafeteria. This will feature both bands and choirs in 6-12 grades playing and singing Christmas and holiday music.

Tristan M. Macadams

U.S. Air Force Airman Tristan M. Macadams recently graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Macadams is the son of Leslie Bowman and stepson of Michael Turner of Grangeville. He is a 2017 graduate of Grangeville High School.

Idaho County Republican Central Committee meets Dec. 19; candidate McGeachin to attend

The Idaho County Republican Central Committee will meet Tuesday, Dec. 19, 6 p.m. at the Super 8. A quick business meeting will be held as members enjoy a finger foods potluck. Attending will be former state representative Janice McGeachin, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor. She will be staying overnight and available to meet people in the area. Puckett wins grade-level holiday card contest

A joyful, wintry watercolor by Marsing Middle School student Drew Hanley will grace this year’s holiday cards from the Idaho State Department of Education. Clearwater Meal Center luncheon set for Dec. 20
