Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming a group of home schoolers from the Kooskia, Harpster, Kamiah areas for a history lesson about Elk City and the area, including a field trip out to Gold Point Mill (see photo). They were able to tour our little museum, watch a scale model of a stamp mill work, and view lots of historic photos in our collection. I also shared a story of James Berryman, who came here with the first miners in 1861 looking for gold. He had quite a life and you can read about him in the book, We’ll All Go Home in the Spring, by Robert Bennett. They were able to see and hold small vials of gold from the area and see a small sample of gold taken from the dredge that worked the Southfork near the mouth of Crooked River. It was a good day! Anyone who would like to visit the museum with a group or alone, can call me at 208-842-2452 or just stop by the Elk City Hotel Gift Shop.
