Corruption and dishonest proceedings do occur among public officials, it is a known fact, yet many ignore this issue. It is well-known and well-hidden because people are afraid both of reprisal and of the social revolution that would come from exposing the truth. Also many can expose the truth, and become the victim of retaliation when nothing comes of the issue. We can seek out the voices of people who know how the justice system is and try to get rid of the “bad apples” or keep letting the corruption get worse. One of the responsibilities we place on the people running our legal system is upholding the highest standards of ethical behavior. The system allows too much room for error by our so-called “justice system.” One day your family may be the victim of this and then what? Speak up and make your county accountable for their lack of moral integrity, and help to make a system we can have confidence in.
Jacob Smart chose to fight back with his tort claim against Idaho County after being accused of numerous crimes. The prosecuting attorney comes back with wanting to file a penalty enhancement against Smart. Seems like a very extreme measure to take all of a sudden, but it does turn the pressure away from the county. When one is accused and comes back with a tort claim they get an extreme reprisal? In many cases when there is evidence lacking, prosecuting attorneys will try and find another way to make the accused do time.
Authority and influence seem to make more of a difference than proof and facts. It is not the case of being innocent until proven guilty, it is guilty until proven innocent. The harsh truth is that you can still prove your innocence and it is overlooked, thrown out or covered up. The end result is whatever the legal system in your zip code wants it to be. This type of acceptance from the community poses a threat to all in society. Not only does it undermine public trust, it tarnishes virtually every aspect of society.
