Salmon River Savages won the Orofino Christmas Tournament in a barnburner Dec. 28, 2013! The Savages won by one point on Terrun Zolman’s three-point score with 20 seconds to go for the last game of the tourney. Down the whole game, at one point by 9, the Salmon River varsity basketball team closed out at crunch time. Twice after Zolman’s three-point shot, the defense had to turn back the Maniacs. The final score was 50 to 49. Leighton Vander Esch did miss the front end of a one-on-one down the stretch, but still was high scorer with 23 points and a huge 16 rebounds. Jimmy Shepherd had a season high offensive output with 17 points. Freshman Tucker Boyd in the backup starter role scored five points. Salmon River improves to four-two for the season. Coach Charlie Shepherd said that Orofino shot well keeping the lead until 20 seconds from the buzzer. The starting Savages have experience and versatility that includes a variety of shooters that can drain a three-pointer under pressure.
Salmon River Savages will take on Meadows Valley Mountaineers this Friday, Jan. 10, for the first home game in this year’s season. Salmon River Savages are the reigning state champions in classification 1A D2.
School started again Monday, Jan. 6, after a wonderful Christmas vacation. Students and teachers and staff are ready to finish the semester and play basketball. Check the SRHS office for a complete schedule of SRHS basketball games.
