Very soon we will be in full swing as the election cycle kicks into gear once again. 2014 will prove to be a big election year with many local and state races beckoning voters to get out to the polls. Although the May primary may seem a long way off, here are a few things to keep in mind right now, as there are some early deadlines to pay close attention to.
First, in order to vote in the Primary Election in 2014, every registered elector must either be affiliated with one of the four recognized political parties (Constitution, Democratic, Libertarian or Republican) or have designated themselves as “Unaffiliated” (no party preference). Any elector who did not participate in the 2012 Primary Election and/or who did not select a party affiliation has been automatically designated as an “Unaffiliated” voter.
Registered electors who are currently affiliated with a recognized political party and who wish to change party affiliation may do so by completing a new Party Affiliation form prior to March 14. After March 14, voters affiliated with a political party may not change their affiliation until after the Primary Election. For example, if you are currently registered as a _ (fill in your current political party), but want to change your party affiliation to __ (fill in your desired new political party), you must do so before March 14. Please don’t miss this point or this deadline. These are statutory requirements and we cannot bend the rules after this deadline passes.
Lastly, does public service appeal to you? The window for filing as a candidate for the May primary is March 3, through March 14. This is the same deadline for those seeking office as an “Independent” even though those candidates will not participate in the May Primary Election. Forms can be obtained from the elections office or printed online at www.idahocounty.org under our “Quick Links” section.
