Grangeville Grangeville had Declo down during the first half, but the Hornets found a way to avoid elimination with a 23-17 win by way of a touchdown run during the fourth quarter on Friday night.
GHS jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a short field goal, then used a broken play to set up a Michael Wilson touchdown for a 10-0 lead. Declo answered with an 11-play drive that produced a touchdown and a two-point conversion to close within 10-8. Then Wilson hit Alex Koberstein for a 44-yard touchdown pass. Adding the point-after, Grangeville led 17-8 with about one minute remaining in the first half.
Declo made the most of that minute, hitting four straight passes to pull within 17-15 just 15 second before intermission. When Declo scored next, during the fourth quarter, Grangeville's season came down to a last-second effort. Grangeville used a 12-play series to set up a couple of lobs into the end zone, the last of which left Wilson's hand as the final six seconds ticked away. Both late throws into the end zone were deflected by Declo players and fell incomplete.
Declo will play in the 2A semifinals next weekend. Grangeville's basketball and wrestling seasons will begin in December.
